How loud is 24 decibels (dB)?

How much louder is 24 dB, exactly?
Two different ratios answer this, and mixing them up is the single most common decibel mistake. Sound energy multiplies by ten for every 10 dB, while perceived loudness roughly doubles for every 10 dB. Against the reference of a normal conversation (60 dB), 24 dB carries roughly 0.000× the acoustic energy but your ear reports it as only about 0.08× as loud. That gap between energy and sensation is exactly why loud noise damages hearing before it feels painful.
