Soundproofing that actually works

Two principles beat everything else: mass and sealing. Acoustic foam only tames echo inside a room — to stop sound getting between rooms you need heavy, airtight barriers. Foam on the wall will not quiet a noisy neighbour.

Absorption vs blocking — the crucial distinction

These are different jobs and different products. Absorption reduces echo and reverberation within a room — useful for recording, video calls or a boomy kitchen. Blocking (isolation) stops sound passing through a wall, floor or door. Most people buy foam expecting blocking and are disappointed, because foam does almost none.

Where to start by problem

Noisy neighbour through a wall: seal every gap, then add mass (MLV or a second drywall layer). Echoey room / calls: absorption panels at first-reflection points. Traffic through a window: a heavy curtain plus a secondary glazing panel; the window is almost always the weak point. Footsteps from above: the fix belongs on the floor above (carpet, underlay) — very hard to solve from below.

If you cannot change the room

When you rent or can't modify the structure, the fastest relief is at your ears: good noise-cancelling headphones erase steady low-frequency noise (traffic, HVAC, aircraft) impressively well, letting you concentrate or sleep. Does acoustic foam block noise from next door?
No. Foam absorbs echo and reverberation inside a room — it barely blocks sound travelling between rooms. Blocking needs mass (drywall, mass-loaded vinyl) and airtight sealing, not foam.
What is the cheapest effective soundproofing?
Sealing air gaps. Sound leaks through the smallest openings, so a door-bottom seal and acoustic caulk around a door frame often cut more perceived noise per dollar than any panel.
Do heavy curtains help?
Modestly. Thick curtains absorb some high-frequency noise and reflections but do little against low-frequency or airborne sound through a wall. They help most over a hard window.
